Join Alex and Dr. Ethan Harrod (https://mtmary.edu/academics/undergraduate/psychological-science.html) as they navigate the spirit world in Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece Spirited Away (2001) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429)! The English language dubbed version features the voice acting of Daveigh Chase (RIP :'( ), Suzanne Pleshette, Jason Marsden, and Susan Egan. Chihiro is a little girl whose family is moving, when they happen upon a strangely deserted resort town. Her parents turn into pigs after eating some food, they are subsumed within a spirit world, and Chihiro, now named Sen, must navigate working for an evil witch named Yubaba so she can find her parents, turn them back into people and get out of the spirit world. Along the way, she meets No Face, a spirit that learns the value of family and empathy from Chihiro. Several topics are discussed in this episode, but cultural psychology — and the differences between this Japanese film and American films — is the overarching theme and concepts. Joining him are his normal contributors, including Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, and Madeline Kahn. When Thorndyke is framed for murder, he must use all the Hitchcockian tools at his disposal to clear his name. Of course, no discussion of Hitchcock films can be made without a discussion of Freud, as well as the use of the term "High Anxiety", using humor as a means to cope with anxiety, the role of suspense to build a crescendo of anxiety, and a brief foray into institutionalization and its foibles. Episode 114: If We're Going to Do Homages, Let's Do Psych Ones — High Anxiety (1977) with Ed Hansen
Join Alex in a solo episode as he has some fun with the day this episode goes out to the public: 4/20! The film explored is the oft-ridiculed Reefer Madness (1938) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028346), a propaganda film against the drug marijuana. Originally, it was meant to be an education film for parents so that they may notice the warning signs produced by a church group. The film earned cult status when it was shown in the exploitation film circuit in the '30s & '40s, earning immortality when efforts to preserve its historical status were undertaken in the 1970s. The film exaggerates and completely misidentifies the effects and consequences of marijuana use, using this phony information to invoke fear in ignorant viewers. Episode 113: Do Some Weed, Then Do a Murder — Reefer Madness (1938)
In this JASP video, I explain how to use the Synthetic Data module (created by doomlab) to create artificial/synthetic data to create fake data for TEACHING and EXPLORATORY purposes based on real data (or expanding canned datasets).The module is part of a new functionality, new to version 0.96, where JASP community members can submit modules for download and incorporation into a user's environment. The Online Module Library, within the app, is where you can install and uninstall these community modules.
